Carmakers combine for charging stations

Four of Europe’s largest carmakers are joining forces in a plan to set up a network of ultra-fast charging stations on the continent’s main roads, writes Brian Byrne.

They are BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen Group and the plan calls for the installation of some 400 stations across Europe which are brand-independent and use the Combine Charging System standard.

Each company has committed ‘substantial investments’ to set up the network, showing their belief in the future of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs).

Other car companies will be encouraged to come on board the joint venture.
